D & R Canal

For the past couple weeks, I've been working on a commissioned painting.  It depicts the Delaware & Raritan feeder canal, one of my old painting subjects when I lived in Titusville, New Jersey.  30 x 24 inches, oil on linen canvas.

When I Looked Back.

When I looked back, I could see the two distant towers of the Rijksmuseum, which were oddly matched by the two sides of the nearer bridge arch.  9x12 oil on panel.

A Drawing and A Painting

Canal WIP

Golden Gowanus

One doesn't usually associate the Gowanus Canal, seen here from the Carroll Street bridge in Brooklyn, with the Venetian paintings of Turner, but the golden glow on the buildings and the water from the late afternoon winter sun does it for me.  Unfortunately the only boat in the canal is a sunken wreck on the left, not a gondola, while parked buses line up on the right.   6x8 oil on panel.

When The Light Is Right

If you were to take the walkway that goes around the Whole Foods supermarket at Third and Third in Brooklyn, you  would see this view of the Gowanus Canal where it forks into two directions.  That building in the background does have the funny cubist shape.  The Gowanus Canal is beautiful when the light is right.  This is an 11x14 oil on multimedia board.

Simple Venetian

Another Venetian painting, 18x20 oil on canvas like the previous one.  I am trying to paint easily and simply, and it seems to be working.

Venice Vision

It's not possible to paint a picture of Venice and not having it look like something one might not want it to look like.  I'm reminded of Andrew Wyeth's comment that he refused to travel to Europe because it was too picturesque for him.  But sometimes, I want to have fun, push paint around on a canvas, see what happens, and besides any attempt to re-invent painting is out of my control.
