Two Bridges And A River

A painting from a week ago not previously posted: it shows the confluence of two bridges over the Hoosic River in North Adams, MA.  The river, as it goes through the city, is mostly confined to a concrete channel. 9x12 inches, oil on panel.

Next To The Tracks

Pan Am Railways building next to the tracks in North Adams, MA: a slow painting.  We received enough rain the other day to keep the puddles filled.  12x16 inches, oil on panel.

'Bridgeness'

It becomes apparent immediately that if I'm trying to paint something as complex as this bridge, I cannot paint the details, just a semblance.  Squint and paint the shapes that seem to be visible.  Try to capture the 'bridgeness'.  9x12 inches, oil on panel, charcoal pencil on paper.

Woody Stream

A Favorite Street in Brooklyn

Atlantic Avenue is one of my favorite streets in Brooklyn.  This view shows the Shuttle bridge near Franklin Avenue.  I used only three colors: ultramarine blue, raw umber, and yellow ochre for this one.  12x16 oil on panel.

When I Looked Back.

When I looked back, I could see the two distant towers of the Rijksmuseum, which were oddly matched by the two sides of the nearer bridge arch.  9x12 oil on panel.

Under and Very Large

Under the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn is Hamilton Avenue, here seen headed in the southeastern direction.  I seem to find myself making small Brooklyns.  In this case a small painting of a very large structure.  6x8 oil on panel.

Souvenir

A souvenir of Toulouse, France: the old Pont Neuf, the Garonne River and the Hotel-Dieu Saint Jacques.  The foliage is new.  Everything else is old.  14x18 oil on canvas.

Bisected Twice in Brooklyn

An 18x24 oil on canvas of the Union Street Bridge in Brooklyn.  I'm always intrigued by the ways to bisect a canvas in both directions and put stuff in each section so that it doesn't look crossed.  Of course I like the bridge too with the late afternoon light and shadows.
