North By AT

A painting done four years ago that I've never posted.  It depicts the view north down the Appalachian Trail towards North Adams, MA from the edge of the road at the top of Mount Greylock.  The size is approximately 12x16 inches, oil on multimedia board.

What It Was

When the hikers emerge out of the woods, and start climbing the stone steps, if they turn around to look back, this is the view they see, at least yesterday.  Yesterday, after they saw me, they were turning around to see what it was that I was painting.  12x16 inches, oil on linen panel.  

Appearing Larger

With the corn stalks gone, the mountain appears larger.  It's Mount Prospect, which hides the taller Mount Greylock behind it.  The Appalachian Trail goes up to the top of Mount Prospect, where there's a clearing from which you can see most of Williamstown, MA,  but not this spot where I was standing with my easel. 10 x 20 inches, oil on panel.

The Dirt Road

 

This one I painted back on Monday morning.  It depicts the dirt road between the corn field and the pasture.  The cows came by to watch me, but left quickly when they realized that I had nothing for them.  The mountain is Mount Prospect over which runs the Appalachian Trail.

Trail and Trial

This is one of those paintings, where the execution may not match an ambitious composition.  I don't want to rework it right now, so will keep it aside so I can keep glancing at it from the corner of my eye. It's a view of Phelps Avenue at Route 2 in North Adams, which is actually the Appalachian Trail at this very spot.   Not too many trees here, though you can see Mount Prospect in the background from which the trail ascends and descends.
