Revisiting the Hoosic

The painting I did yesterday at the stone beach on the Hoosic River in Williamstown, MA.  I painted there earlier this year in March when the place looked quite different. 9x12 inches, oil on canvas panel.

Placid Hoosic

The Hoosic River is quite placid in the summer on the east side of the Protection Avenue bridge in North Adams. 18x24 inches, oil on linen canvas.

Grafton Pond

Yesterday afternoon, I had enough time to visit my favorite pond in Grafton, MA for a quick oil sketch. 9x12 inches, oil on canvas panel.

The Reflected Sky

The weather was nice today so I went back to the stony beach on the Hoosic River in Williamstown, MA.  The water was higher than the last time I was there, but there's still nothing yet to see on the trees and bushes. I'm attracted to the river because of the colors of the reflected sky and grassy banks. 12x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

Like This Painting

Sometimes things seem like this painting.  In any case, it's a view of Caspian Lake in Greensboro, VT, for the ephemera series of things that don't last long.  12x16 inches, oil on linen panel.

A Second Painting

A second painting done at Berry Pond in the Pittsfield State Forest yesterday.  9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

To Paint...One Paints

The sun is shining at this moment when I write these words, but it disappeared behind the clouds when I was out painting earlier. Nevertheless, if the determination is to paint, especially after a forty-five-minute ride, one paints with the circumstances.  This is a view of Berry Pond in the Pittsfield State Forest, a quiet place when I was there. 9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

Quick Resolution

The second little pond painting from the other day: when you have an opportunity to do a second one right after the first one, it's usually fun because it resolves quickly.  6x8 inches, oil on panel.

Nature Reflects

The appeal of painting outside is looking intently at something that is looking back.  6x8 inches, oil on panel.

Emblematic of Painting

Standing next the pond edge I watched and painted the late afternoon sun lighting everything up. When I stopped painting all had faded into shadows.  A reflecting pond is emblematic of painting itself.  Painting a reflective pond is...what?   9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

Pattern-Mode

A painting I did Saturday morning at the edge of the pond in Grafton, MA.  Reflections put me in a pattern-mode.  9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

Paint The Pool

Another painting that I did inside the rocks at Ogunquit, ME.  I scrambled down to this spot because I wanted to paint the pool reflecting the sky.  9x12 inches, oil on linen.

This boat in Galilee is called the "Fortitude".  16x20 inches, oil on linen panel.

Rockport Painting

This painting underwent some slight changes, so I photographed it again. For some reason, I've always wanted to do this view.  16x20 inches, oil on linen panel.

On The Other Side

A second painting done on the opposite side of the pond.  I took advantage of the painting's ground for the near right tree trunks, and the pond reflects a distant tree on the other side, making for an interesting contrast.  10x10 inches, oil on linen panel.

Irresistible Rhythm

The tree trunks spanned the pond; only those on either side of my sight were pointing up, while all the rest were reflections.  Their rhythm across the water was irresistible. 9x12 inches, oil on panel, charcoal on paper.

Next To The Tracks

Pan Am Railways building next to the tracks in North Adams, MA: a slow painting.  We received enough rain the other day to keep the puddles filled.  12x16 inches, oil on panel.

Unknown Pond

When I first heard of this small pond, I never imagined how overgrown and impassable would be its edges, except for one access point.  And it's in eastern Massachusetts in a fairly well-developed area.  While quietly painting yesterday at the pond, I witnessed numerous splashes, sources unknown to me, and a muskrat crossing over from one side to other.  There's an old beaver lodge on the opposite shore, but all the  dropped trees and chewed stumps are not recent. 9x12 inches, oil on linen; 9x12 inches, pencil on paper.
