Perilously Close

Hoosic River, Williamstown, MA. 11x14 inches, oil on canvas panel.  The river flows perilously close to the old footpath's edge, which is caving in at some places.  But it's a great view.

At the River Bend

On Top of the River

Hoosic River, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on linen panel.  Trees leaning over the river are on top of the river in a painting so they tend to blend together.  I did this plein air painting this afternoon.

The Light of Luce Road

Never The Same River

Hoosic River from Stony Beach, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel.  The philosopher says that it's never the same river, so I felt free to paint it again.

This Isolated Spot

Hoosic River, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel.  I wandered up the Hoosic through an overgrown path to reach this isolated spot when I was joined suddenly by about fifteen Williams students and their teacher who was leading a class on the effects of industry on the river (not good).  

Nearly the Same

Rivers Joining

Green and Hoosic Rivers, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel.  Yesterday afternoon I painted where the Green River intersects with the Hoosic River forming a "T".  There's a sandy beach here since the water is unusually low.  

Went to the Water

Hoosic River from Stony Beach, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel.  I went to the water this morning.  Even though I painted at this location a couple days ago, no two days are ever alike.

This Old Garage

Garage and Goldenrod, Williamstown, MA. 12x16 inches, oil on canvas panel.  This old garage is probably around 100 years old.  The ground in front is like concrete, even though it has grass, from a century's worth of trucks and tractors compacting it.  I had a hard time (no pun intended) to push my umbrella holder into the ground.

At The Beach

Afternoon Light

Afternoon Light at Field Farm, Williamstown, MA. 11x14 inches, oil on canvas panel.  The sunlight at this time, mid-late afternoon in mid-late August, is spectacular but it moves and fades quickly.  I tried to preserve some of it in this painting from yesterday.

The Mansion This Time

A Mansion, Williamstown, MA. 12x16 inches, oil on linen panel.  I tried a different approach this time, pre-mixing six colors to block in the painting as quickly as possible, instead of drawing it with one color and changing colors on the fly.  I will try yet another approach the next time. 

 

It Did Not Rain

Red Barn, Williamstown, MA. 12x16 inches, oil on canvas panel.  Yesterday I painted until I couldn't ignore the increasing wind, the approaching thunder and the dark clouds behind me.  Of course, it never did rain after all. 

Took a While

Greylock Gouache

Mount Greylock from Field Farm, Williamstown, MA.  8x10 inches, gouache on mixed media paper. It was hot and hazy today, but I can always find a cool shadow there from which to paint.
