Stony Plaza and Smart Phones
Plaza del Obradoiro, Santiago de Compostela. 6x8 inches, watercolor, gouache and pencil on mixed media paper. The hikers don't seem to mind stretching out on the stony surface to use their smart phones.

Santiago de Compostela
Plaza del Obradoiro, Santiago de Compostela. 8x10 inches, watercolor, gouache and pencil on paper. First of a series of sketches of the plaza, usually filled with arriving hikers and visitors. I think of them as postcards to recapture the experience of being there.

Always Moving
Hoosic River, Williamstown, MA. 11x14 inches, oil on canvas panel. While I was painting yesterday, two guys went by in a boat, one fishing, the other trying to control the boat with oars. I said to them, "I need one of those to paint from." The guy with the fishing rod said, "If only we could keep the boat still." If only I could keep the river still.

Ents In Cimiez, Nice
A drawing of olive trees in the garden at the park in Cimiez, Nice. They remind me of ents, because they are so old, each has a distinct personality, and they seem to move around, and certainly they look at you. I would like to do a series. 10x8 inches, pencil on paper.

Next to Allee Miles Davis
Time for a drawing. This one done at the park in Cimiez, Nice, where there are innumerable ancient olive trees. This is a tree next to Allee Miles Davis. The lanes in the park are named after American jazz artists. 8x10 inches, pencil and watercolor on paper.

Great Swimming Squirrel
While painting at a more remote section of Mauserts Pond at Clarksburg State Park this morning, I heard a splash in the water and noticed a creature with a long tail approaching the edge of the shore to my right. Out emerged a gray squirrel, which shook off the water, and ran into the bushes. This is the first time I've ever seen a gray squirrel swim. It came across the small inlet, which spans a good twenty yards from the other shore.
The oil on panel is 8x10 and the prep drawing is 6x8 inches. Same as yesterday: the water was still until I started to paint it.
