From the Bridge

Hoosic River at Protection Avenue, North Adams, MA. 11x14 inches, oil on canvas panel.  With the temperature in the 70s, I was able to stand in the open on the bridge to paint this view.  I last painted here six years ago almost to the day.

Not in the Water

Hoosic River, North Adams, MA.  9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.  This time I went to the Hoosic in North Adams accessed via Ashton Avenue.  The beach area extends into the river, so it only appears that I was painting while standing in water.  

Brooklyn in North Adams

Brooklyn Street, North Adams, MA.  18x24 inches, oil on panel.  A painting I made seven years ago, which I just re-touched a little today to fix a detail that always bothered me. 

Road Squiggles

Pattison Road, North Adams, MA.  6x8 inches, gouache and watercolor on watercolor paper.  This is near where Luce Road in Williamstown changes to Pattison Road in North Adams. The tar squiggles preserve the cracks and reflect the sky. 

Placid Hoosic

The Hoosic River is quite placid in the summer on the east side of the Protection Avenue bridge in North Adams. 18x24 inches, oil on linen canvas.

Looking Out At The World

Majestical, Disorienting

The view east from the top of Mount Greylock towards Adams, MA. While I paint, I overhear people.  What they say most often is "What town is that?"  The top is majestical but can be disorienting.  12x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

PUBLIC Display

Earlier today I installed twenty-six paintings at PUBLIC eat+drink in North Adams, MA. The paintings will be there until at least December.  They are a mix of North Adams, Williamstown, and Brooklyn paintings.  I hope you get a chance to see them!

North By AT

A painting done four years ago that I've never posted.  It depicts the view north down the Appalachian Trail towards North Adams, MA from the edge of the road at the top of Mount Greylock.  The size is approximately 12x16 inches, oil on multimedia board.

What It Was

When the hikers emerge out of the woods, and start climbing the stone steps, if they turn around to look back, this is the view they see, at least yesterday.  Yesterday, after they saw me, they were turning around to see what it was that I was painting.  12x16 inches, oil on linen panel.  

Quiet, Calming Awe

From the moon, Earth's mountains are probably not visible, but when one is on top of even a small mountain, like Greylock, one feels a quiet, calming awe.  I also discovered that it's easier to paint clouds from down below since the higher up you go, so do the clouds, and one's panel is not large enough to include them.  9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

To Walk Or Not

Driving up the mountain, I thought about how I used to walk up.  Later, a book I'm reading on walking admonished me for not walking up the mountain.  Perspective is important here.  I need to paint with all my faculties.  Being weary won't help.  When there was a time I could easily walk up the mountain, I didn't have the ability to paint it.  9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.  

PanAm Railways

A painting I'm reposting since I've tweaked it and re-photographed it.  A group of disparate items hang upon a not-so-evident gridwork, like rags on a clothesline.  It depicts the many-puddled yard of the PanAm Railways office next to the tracks and the bridge over the Hoosic River in North Adams, MA.  12x16 inches, oil on gessobord.
