One More Painting

The Barn at Haley Farm, Williamstown, MA. 9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.  Yesterday afternoon I commiserated with the farmer, who was trying to get as much haying done as possible, in between the recent and expected rains.  Following his lead, I did one more painting ahead of today's rain.

In the Other Direction

This morning I wanted to paint the Hopper again but ended up painting in the other direction. As I walked to my painting spot, I wondered if the bear had returned.  I noticed that a large branch high up in the birch next to the apple tree had crazily lowered itself into the apple tree.  Then I saw the bear partially hidden about ten feet above me. The bear was quiet and still but then let out a snort and the branches moved.  What a klutz! Suddenly I realized maybe I was the klutz.  I moved gently away to another location where the view of the Hopper was not as good as the view in the other direction.  But from where I was, I could see the bottom of the birch and saw the bear eventually leave.  The bear left a mess up in the apple tree.

The Hopper with Clouds and Sun

Here is yesterday's second painting The changing light from the clouds and sun continued throughout most of the day.  The bear did not come back while I was there.  It depicts a view of the Hopper from Haley Farm at the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA.  11x14 inches, oil on canvas panel.

Scampering at the Hopper

This is the first of two paintings of the Hopper, done today from a hayfield at the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA, on a day of clouds and sun.  When I was finished and started to head back to the car, I saw a young bear scampering away from me. I think I interrupted the bear trying to climb a nearby apple tree. He took a sharp left and headed for the woods. 9x12 inches, oil on canvas panel.

This Old Tree

This old tree has seen many people pass by where it stands in front of the barn at Haley Farm next to the path leading to multiple trailheads.  It's located at the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA.  The weather forecast calls for days of rain, so I painted outside yesterday while I could despite the waning sun.  9x12 inches, oil on canvas panel.

Evey year I try to paint this truck at least once.  Since the early 90's, it's been standing in a cow pasture at the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA.  9x12 inches, oil on canvas panel.

Closer Hopper

At the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA, I painted a closer view of the Hopper from the edge of a hayfield next to the trailheads.  6x8 inches, acrylic gouache on Guerrilla Painter carton board.

What You Get

Determined to paint despite the gusting winds, I sheltered next to the barn yesterday afternoon at the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA.  The view wasn't ideal, and so this is what you get.  Earlier I started to set up at the shed with the two tractors but left it quickly when I noticed baby mice darting all over the ground. 6x8 inches, oil on linen panel.

Smitten

This is my very first gouache painting completed a few minutes ago.  I'm smitten.  I used just three colors: yellow ochre, burnt sienna and ultramarine blue, with white.  6 1/2 x 8 inches, gouache on mixed media paper.

Straight Into The Hopper

A few years I saw that the late day sun in November would light up the leafless trees in front of The Hopper, while casting it into deep shadows.  I made a few pastel paintings then.  This time I wanted to make an oil painting, and the conditions were right last week.  The view is from the hayfield at the end of Hopper Road, looking straight into The Hopper in Williamstown, MA.  18x24 inches, oil on canvas.

If The Sun Is Shining

A Hint Of The Hopper

A few days ago I painted in a mowed hay field looking towards the Hopper, which is partially hidden.  I chose this particular spot because... of the shade, not necessarily for the great composition, but that seemed to work out as well: the hint of the Hopper, also with an opening to another hayfield way in the back, a simple composition with some complexity. 9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.
