This Old Garage

Garage and Goldenrod, Williamstown, MA. 12x16 inches, oil on canvas panel.  This old garage is probably around 100 years old.  The ground in front is like concrete, even though it has grass, from a century's worth of trucks and tractors compacting it.  I had a hard time (no pun intended) to push my umbrella holder into the ground.

The Memory Painting

The memory painting of the home of my grandparents keeps on developing, as it sits in my studio where I see it every day.  Funny how that happens.  It's becoming more ethereal.  18x24 inches, oil on linen canvas.

Here's a painting I've been working on for the last few days: a memory painting of the home of my grandparents.  I dedicate it to my sister Anne.  She also loved this old house, as did all of our large family who visited it many times or lived there as children and young adults. 18x24 inches, oil on linen canvas.

Zebra Stripes on a House

This 18x24 oil on canvas painting I completed this morning of a garage attached to a building that probably was a workshop at one time, though it looks like a one room school house.   I was attracted by the windows, and the chimney in relation to the windows, and the abstract shapes, and the clapboards.  The clapboards, Holy Edward Hopper!  Zebra stripes on a house.  This building appeared a few days ago under the heading of "Backlit".

Vestigial Duplication

This 8x10 pen and ink drawing represents a garage on Lincoln Place near Bedford Avenue.  It always seems such an extravagance to have a small two car garage on a street lined with brownstones, a vestige of a different past.  I've done this garage before, but this time, I was attracted by the geometry left by the sun and snow that duplicates the garage's shapes.  This is drawing number 59.

I finished the first volume of the Matisse biography. I have always loved the great masterpieces like Red Studio and The Piano Lesson in MOMA, but now think there's much more I need to learn about Matisse, and quickly, especially about the paintings that are not easy to like. I will start the second volume of the biography shortly. In the meantime I am borrowing a pile of Matisse books from local libraries.
