This Old Garage

Garage and Goldenrod, Williamstown, MA. 12x16 inches, oil on canvas panel.  This old garage is probably around 100 years old.  The ground in front is like concrete, even though it has grass, from a century's worth of trucks and tractors compacting it.  I had a hard time (no pun intended) to push my umbrella holder into the ground.

On a Dusty Dirt Road

Not Too Architectural

Mansion, Williamstown, MA. 9x12 inches, oil on linen panel. What kept popping up in my head while thinking about painting the mansion are those Beach at Trouville paintings by Monet where he painted large mansion-like buildings on the right that are painterly and not too architectural.  I want to convey the sense of this building without being too architectural.

The Mansion This Time

A Mansion, Williamstown, MA. 12x16 inches, oil on linen panel.  I tried a different approach this time, pre-mixing six colors to block in the painting as quickly as possible, instead of drawing it with one color and changing colors on the fly.  I will try yet another approach the next time. 

 

Not Another Shed

Mansion, Williamstown, MA. 9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.  Definitely not another shed.  This one was tough to do, to just suggest the details without painting them. I painted quickly and didn't look back too much.

Old Garage and Flowers

Old Garage and Flowers, Williamstown, MA. 11x14 inches, oil on canvas panel.  This one I did this morning on site.  The angular lines appealed to me, as well as the spots of flowers and tree holes.  

It Did Not Rain

Red Barn, Williamstown, MA. 12x16 inches, oil on canvas panel.  Yesterday I painted until I couldn't ignore the increasing wind, the approaching thunder and the dark clouds behind me.  Of course, it never did rain after all. 

A Wild Presence

Earlier in the Day

Kept Changing

Painting on Day 2

Mount Greylock from Mount Hope Farm, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel.  Seldom does one get two identical nice days in a row weather wise.  When it happens and I painted on day one, I'm always tempted to go back and work some more on the painting on day 2.  

The View on the Right

Thinking Out Loud

Farm Cart, Williamstown, MA. 9x12 inches, oil on gesso panel.  An old cart, seemingly abandoned, filled with debris, reminds me of my humanity.  So, I cannot just walk by.  I have to paint it. It's like a still life sitting outside.
