Lines In Nature

If there are no lines in nature, how is one supposed to draw with a pencil?  Field Farm, Williamstown, MA.  All 9x12 inches, ebony pencil on paper.

Imperfection

In his journal on June 29, 1857, Eugene Delacroix copied this maxim from La Rochefoucauld: "There are beautiful things which have more brilliance when they remain imperfect than when they are too perfect." A view of Field Farm in Williamstown, MA from the North Trail. 6x8 inches, gouache on mixed media paper.

The Buzzing of the Bees

While on the North Trail at Field Farm in Williamstown, MA yesterday afternoon, the only sound I could hear was the buzzing of the bees.  6x8 inches, gouache on mixed media paper.

Like This Painting

Sometimes things seem like this painting.  In any case, it's a view of Caspian Lake in Greensboro, VT, for the ephemera series of things that don't last long.  12x16 inches, oil on linen panel.

A Dry Spot Mid-Stream

The Green River at Mount Hope Park is so low that I stood in a dry spot mid-stream to paint this view facing north. 12x9 inches, oil on linen canvas.

Like An Old Friend

Painting at a site that is like an old friend, I selected a crisscross view of hills and mountain.  The site is Sheep Hill with Greylock and the Hopper in the background.  12x9 inches, oil on linen canvas.

The Old Milk Shed

Another plein air view of the old milk shed. 12x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

A Compelling Presence

The nearby old milk shed now holds hay bales for horses, not milk cans.  Its accompanying barn is long gone. Though the shed appears rugged, it is slowly falling apart.  Nevertheless, visually, and metaphorically, it will always have a compelling presence.  12x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

In a Rocky Ditch

This painting occurred while standing in a rock-filled ditch looking down Luce Road in Williamstown, MA.   At least, it's a nice view. 12x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

Different Day

The same view, different day, off of Luce Road in Williamstown, MA. Since this is turning into a series, I'll stop it here, and try to find something more appealing.  12x9 inches, oil on linen panel.

To Paint...One Paints

The sun is shining at this moment when I write these words, but it disappeared behind the clouds when I was out painting earlier. Nevertheless, if the determination is to paint, especially after a forty-five-minute ride, one paints with the circumstances.  This is a view of Berry Pond in the Pittsfield State Forest, a quiet place when I was there. 9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

The Ephemera Series

A painting I did for the fun of doing it. The beginning of the Ephemera series of things that don't last long.  It's a view of Gloucester harbor from the Marine Railways.  12x16 inches, oil on linen panel.

An Earlier Iteration

When I was working on this small painting of the backyard, it went through several iterations.  I was chasing the light.  I decided to bring it back to one of the earlier iterations. 6x8 inches, gouache on mixed media paper.

Berry Pond, at elevation 2,150 feet, located in Pittsfield State Forest, is the highest natural body of water in Massachusetts.  The water is smooth, while the road to get up there is rough.  9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.
