A Souvenir of Aix

This small painting is a souvenir of the time I spent in Aix-en-Provence.  I would pass this fountain daily on my way to and from French language class.  The location is the Place des Quatre Dauphins at the intersection of the Rue du 4 Septembre and Rue Cardinale.  In hindsight, I probably should have spent more time wandering in Le Tholonet in the footsteps of Cezanne.  6x8 oil on gessobord.

A Wedge of Sky

A different kind of urban scape this time:  A small painting, just for the heck of it, of the plaza in front of the church dedicated to Mary Magdalene in the town of Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume in Provence.  It was like a stage setting with a wedge of sky.  6x8 oil on gessobord.

An Old Part of Aix

Here's a view of a side street in the old part of Aix in Provence.  The morning light was bouncing off the sun lit buildings across the narrow lane to those in shadow. This is a studio painting I did about three weeks ago.  12x12 oil on panel.

Do Them!

Inspired by Bernard Dunstan, I'm feeling irreverent today.  I offer one last ironic thought from his how-to book, Learning To Paint.  Referring to the "rules" about painting, Dunstan writes, "Think of all the things you were told... not to do, and do them!

No Mas

For the first day of summer, this morning I painted a driveway.  The breeze was gentle and persistent with the sun going in and out.  I pretended that I was in Provence painting on a country road, except the building alongside the driveway doesn't look like a mas, the Provencal farmhouse, but is a Federal style house in Hoosic, NY.  9x12 oil on panel.

Side Ways

This could have been done more tightly, but that's not what I am after. Just a quick glance down a side street on a sunny day. No traffic. Little noise. Everyone is somewhere else. 9x12 pastel on pastelmat.

Sometimes it's good to do some non-natural images. This is a side street in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, a small town in Provence. I was there in June. I think I will do a series of these views. 9x12 pastel on colourfix suede.

Nice Drawing

Sorry for not checking in sooner, but I didn't have access to the Internet during the last week and a half. This drawing is a page from my sketchbook. I tried to fill it up during that time, which I spent in Provence and Paris. You will see some different images in the weeks ahead. Among other places, I visited, Arles, Aix-en-Provence and Giverny to pay homage.
