Late Summer Cornfield

Late Summer Cornfield in Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel.  It was overcast, and looking like rain, so I stayed close to home for this quick painting.

Natural Expressionism

Back Field at Field Farm, Williamstown, MA. 9x12 inches, oil on canvas panel.  I'm trying to express the natural expressionism of the lush field seen from the path.

A Shorthand Field

Field at Field Farm, Williamstown, MA. 9x12 inches, pen and ink on paper. I'm trying to develop a shorthand to convey a hint of this reality.

Drawing And Walking

Drawing at Field Farm in Williamstown, MA. 9x12 inches, charcoal on paper.  I stop to draw too when walking on the paths through the tall goldenrod and milkweed.

The Edge of the Fields

Late Summer Field at Field Farm, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel.  I set up to paint on a path which separates the edge of the woods and the edge of the fields.  In front of me a wide view, behind me a wall of trees.

The Sea in Front of Me

The Ocean at Field Farm, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel.  Standing next to an expanse of plants six feet tall waving in the breeze, I imagine the sea in front of me.

Field and Clouds

Field and Clouds at Field Farm, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel. First, the good and bad news: the hay bales are gone, hauled away by the farmer.  This painting is a study to figure out what I'm going to do next.

One After Another

Three Hay Bales at Field Farm in Williamstown, MA. 9x12 inches, charcoal on paper.  When Monet posted his grainstacks on his Instagram account, some people said, "Not another one!" but that's the way it works with a series, one after another.

Time For a Drawing

Hay Bales at Field Farm. 9x12 inches, charcoal on paper.  It's time for a drawing.  I was inspired by the fabulous urban drawings I saw recently done by the English artist Peter Brown, aka Pete the Street.

Just An Empty Field

Old Hancock Barns. 16x20 inches, oil on linen canvas.  Yesterday I drove by the spot where these two barns used to stand.  Just an empty field now, leaving an empty feeling.  I felt compelled to remember them in this painting done today.

Temporary Addition

Hay Bales at Field Farm in Williamstown, MA. 12x16 inches, oil on canvas panel.  The round hay bales are an intriguing though temporary addition to the landscape.  At Field Farm they randomly fill a large space offsetting the iconic background.

One Can Find

The Hopper, Mount Greylock and Hay Bales at Field Farm, Williamstown, MA. 11x14 inches, oil on linen canvas.  At the moment, there are so many round hay bales, that one can find an interesting composition by walking around the big field.

The Declining Light

Late afternoon view across Smith Cove in Gloucester, MA. 6x8 inches, oil on gessobord.  Someone who saw me painting asked what I was painting, because it looked like there was nothing to see.  I think I was trying to paint the declining light.

The Hopper and Hay Bales

The Hopper and Hay Bales from Field Farm in Williamstown, MA.  12x12 inches, oil on linen panel.  It wasn't windy today, so my umbrella didn't do any somersaults like the other day.  Everywhere one looks right now farmers are mowing.

The Far Away Hopper

Another Vantage Point

Another vantage point from which to view the Hopper, on the boundary between a woody pasture and two hayfields at Haley Farm at the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA. 9x12 inches, oil on canvas panel.

A Sense of Wildness

Painting this view of the Hopper, partially hidden by two old tree trunks, during yesterday's windy day, gave me a sense of wildness.  9x12 inches, oil on canvas panel.
