Lovely comment from Sam. Good enough to write it up on my studio wall! Robert, your process perception (of the painting process) is something that haunts me also as a painter. Did you finish reading the Matisse catalogue? Did he define "true painting" or did you?
Sheila, I did indeed finish the catalog. Matisse wrote the phrase "true painting" in a 1919 letter to his wife. The cataloguers picked up on it, but I don't think Matisse ever mentioned it again, though he was always searching for something beyond painting through his painting. The quotes I posted July 22 get as close as the catalog and Matisse allowed.
