Al Gury, in his book on painting Alla Prima, writes, if I remember correctly, that 50% of outdoor work will be successes, and 50% will not be. It may take a while to determine which works fall into which category, and there might be gradations.
Thank you for your post about the failures of plein air paintings and Al Gury! I am interested in both! Just ordered his new book that will be out in October. Also, thanks for the idea/tip about doing black and white sketches plein air, then color in the studio. I have such trouble reconciling the artistic process with the realism process! Everything you are saying is so timely for me! I tend to get confused en plein air. But in the studio things sometimes stiffen up. It is an interesting process. I very much like your black and white studies, and especially your last paintings that you posted today.
