Longview Terrace

A 14x18 oil of a street in Williamstown.  Actually it's a canal view from a bridge... OK.  It's like a canal view from a bridge.

See? Give your imagination an inch, and it'll take it!

Lovely comment from Sam. Good enough to write it up on my studio wall! Robert, your process perception (of the painting process) is something that haunts me also as a painter. Did you finish reading the Matisse catalogue? Did he define "true painting" or did you?

Sam, You are right!

Sheila, I did indeed finish the catalog. Matisse wrote the phrase "true painting" in a 1919 letter to his wife. The cataloguers picked up on it, but I don't think Matisse ever mentioned it again, though he was always searching for something beyond painting through his painting. The quotes I posted July 22 get as close as the catalog and Matisse allowed.
