Back Field

Beautiful day this morning, so I was out in the back fields looking in.  My goal is do something with what is usually not looked at.  We usually go by fields, not stand at the edge and look in.  I am trying just by accumulation of marks that emulate the direction of grass and tree limbs and light within shadow to make something of nothing.  I just finished a book that studied the question of why there is something instead of nothing.  The answer is called 'creation'.

Another nice drawing Robert! Are you going to use these as studies for larger oil or pastel works? That's what I am trying to do - use my pencil sketches and memory instead of a photo reference. It's been interesting ; )

This is really nice, Bob, and the fact that it's monochromatic seems to emphasize the beauty of the shapes of this quiet field.

Eden, Thanks for your comment. I think this series will stand alone as b&w drawings for the present. My memory is not as good as yours, judging from your work.

I think you need to use whatever methods work for you. I read somewhere once that whatever means you use, whatever the original physical site may actually have looked like (for landscapes), will be forgotten if the final result is good.

Donna, Thanks. I think these need to be black and white. In color, they would be completely different pictures, though I might try something else besides b&w. The handling is giving me insight for handling pastel and oil paint, I think.
