I applied thin acrylic washes of raw sienna, burnt umber, and ultramarine blue, in effect making a watercolor version of the painting, over which I then applied pastel. It's like having colored paper, which is colored in a way resembling the final painting, but still needing the application of pastel layers to bring it off.

Great abstract forms, Bob. Please describe your washes.
