A strange feeling indeed! From the charcoal sketches, I thought I was looking into a hole. Color is the clue I needed; now I have my bearings. Still, both the charcoal and the pastel are wonderfully abstract.
I've been looking at your blog for a couple of months. Your use of color and texture is pure delight. I also love your charcoal studies, they're so alive and the composition is always dynamic. Thanks for sharing your process and results, it inspires me to look around more carefully and do more drawing outdoors.

Sam, You were looking at a wall of a hole. Thanks.
Nika, Thank you for your comments. The quarry is a negative space with a positive influence.
