Variation on a Sidewalk

Dean Street Near Classon, Brooklyn. 9x12 inches, oil on gesso panel.  A Brooklyn tradition: parking on the sidewalk.  This series could be called "variations on a sidewalk."

The Light of Luce Road

Luce Road, Williamstown, MA. 9x12 inches, oil on linen canvas.  Late this afternoon I set up at the top of the aptly named Luce Road to paint the light and shadows.

Crash Painting

Luce Road, Williamstown, MA. 9x12 inches, oil on linen canvas.  This afternoon I set up in the field looking down the road, not in the ditch, though I thought about it.  Thankfully I didn't because, as I started to paint, a group of motorcyclists roared by and one crashed exactly where I was painting four days ago.  He was ok, but his bike was not.

From the Ditch

Luce Road, Williamstown, MA. 9x12 inches, oil on linen canvas.  I stood in the ditch to paint this one. Interestingly I've painted several versions of this view (all from the ditch) and they are all sold.  Maybe I should paint in a ditch more often.

It Wasn't Far

Hay Bales, Williamstown, MA. 9x12 inches, oil on linen canvas.  So, I walked around the hay fields this afternoon, getting my exercise, and stopped at the round hay bales when I saw the triangles of the old cow barn behind them.  Of course, I had to go back to the car to get all my painting gear, but it wasn't far.

Perkins Potpourri

Perkins Cove, Ogunquit, ME. 9x12 inches, oil on linen canvas.  The fishing boats stack up and overlap to become a potpourri of paint.

Nubble Lighthouse

Nubble Lighthouse, York, ME.  11x14 inches, oil on gesso panel.  When I first saw the Nubble Lighthouse from a distance, I thought it was reachable by land.  That illusion ended at the water's edge.  Here's a painterly illusion.

Simple This Time

Dirt Road, Williamstown, MA.  9x12 inches, oil on canvas panel.  I opted to keep it very simple this time. I was no doubt helped by having to move myself and easel out of the way several times to avoid the dust clouds from a huge truck going back and forth from a nearby field where cornstalks were being ground up.

The Megunticook River

Harbor, Camden, Me.  9x12 inches, oil on canvas panel.  A view of the harbor, also called the Megunticook River, seen from Harbor Park in Camden, Maine.

Like A Dried-up Riverbed

Dirt Road, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel. The farm dirt road separating the pasture from the corn field is like a dried-up riverbed.

Never The Same River

Hoosic River from Stony Beach, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel.  The philosopher says that it's never the same river, so I felt free to paint it again.

This Isolated Spot

Hoosic River, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel.  I wandered up the Hoosic through an overgrown path to reach this isolated spot when I was joined suddenly by about fifteen Williams students and their teacher who was leading a class on the effects of industry on the river (not good).

Nearly the Same

Hoosic River from Stony Beach, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel. Another painting this afternoon from nearly the same location on Stony Beach as a couple previous paintings.

Rivers Joining

Green and Hoosic Rivers, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel.  Yesterday afternoon I painted where the Green River intersects with the Hoosic River forming a "T".  There's a sandy beach here since the water is unusually low.

Went to the Water

Hoosic River from Stony Beach, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel.  I went to the water this morning.  Even though I painted at this location a couple days ago, no two days are ever alike.

This Old Garage

Garage and Goldenrod, Williamstown, MA. 12x16 inches, oil on canvas panel.  This old garage is probably around 100 years old.  The ground in front is like concrete, even though it has grass, from a century's worth of trucks and tractors compacting it.  I had a hard time (no pun intended) to push my umbrella holder into the ground.

Down the Road

Edge of a Cornfield, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, oil on canvas panel.  Down the farmer's road, along the edge of the cornfield, you encounter goldenrod, more fields, and can see the distant mountains in Savoy.

At The Beach

Hoosic River at Stony Beach, Williamstown, MA. 8x10 inches, on canvas panel.  I spent a couple hours at the beach this afternoon.

Old Garage and Goldenrod, Williamstown, MA.  11x14 inches, oil on canvas panel.  I like painting a closer up landscape.

Afternoon Light

Afternoon Light at Field Farm, Williamstown, MA. 11x14 inches, oil on canvas panel.  The sunlight at this time, mid-late afternoon in mid-late August, is spectacular but it moves and fades quickly.  I tried to preserve some of it in this painting from yesterday.

Further Along

Pottery Studio Sink, Pownal, VT. 16x12 inches, oil on linen canvas.  This one I decided to push further along, adding more paint, more definition and more contrast.

Sitting On The Edge

Hay Bales, Field Farm, Williamstown, MA. 11x14 inches, oil on canvas panel.  Yesterday I found this hay bale sitting on the edge of the path and on the edge of the shadow.
