A Combo-Experiment

This is a combo-experiment.  I've wanted to start doing interiors.  And I want to work from drawings where there's just so much information, so some has to be invented. Here's a view from a living room out to the porch, an excuse for putting down painted markings, from a drawing I did yesterday.  6x8 inches, gouache on mixed media paper.

Painting of a Painting

A large painting of two boats being painted at the port in Nice.  I did a small gouache painting of the same view in September at Nice.  The idea of painting an image of a boat that is being painted for some reason intrigues me. 18x24 inches, oil on linen canvas.

With A Winter Coat

This morning I was reminded of this old farmhouse, which I painted several times this spring.  So I painted it again today with its winter coat on.  6x8 inches, gouache on mixed media paper.

Painting Them Again

The port of Nice has a large number of brightly painted boats.  I'm trying to figure out how to paint them again.  6x8 inches, oil on linen panel.

New Home

Here’s the 3 by 4 foot landscape painting of Mount Greylock and the Hopper, which I recently completed, hanging in its new location in a collector's home.

A Reactionary

When I was young, I read Clement Greenberg, and if you subscribed to his ideas, painting was over. Robert Motherwell declared eighty years ago that landscape painting ended with Cezanne. So here I am again painting in a retardataire, reactionary, worn out manner.  But then, I think because other people have already visited Paris, that isn't a reason why I shouldn't go too.  A Seine postcard painting. 6x8 inches, oil on multimedia artboard.

The View Outside

Monet did a couple of wonderful paintings looking out of the windows at the Louvre.  I think he was there to copy a painting but found the view outside as, or more, interesting.  I always look out of museum windows when I can, especially at the Louvre. 18x24 inches, oil on linen canvas.

Draw Something

It was still sunny, but chilly.  My goal was to stop somewhere and draw something. In a large open field, with a few trees, I drew as quickly as possible since the light was fading.  Field Farm in Williamstown, MA.  9x12 inches, pencil on paper.

Exhibition Award

My painting in the 2022 Rockport Art Association & Museum National Show received the Paul Goodnow Memorial Award for Traditional Landscape in Oil. I’m delighted and honored, as well as deeply grateful, because the exhibition has so many great artworks in it. Thank you. The exhibition runs through December 31.

Just Playing

Every now and then (it should be more often) I give myself permission to just fool around with paint and not worry about the next masterpiece.  Here I'm just playing with another Seine postcard scene near Notre Dame.  6x8 inches, oil on linen panel.

Negative Spaces on a Wonderful Day

The afternoon was cold, raw, and overcast, but I still went on a walk at Field Farm with my sketchpad intending to draw something.  I stopped at this mass of tree trunks framing more tree trunks.  Drawing furiously, I focused on the negative spaces keeping with the mood.  When done, I kept walking noting that it was a wonderful day. 9x12 inches, pencil on paper.

From The Center

The Hopper and Mount Greylock from the center of Field Farm in Williamstown, MA.  The pine tree, which I use as a "repoussoir" to set off the background, is usually inaccessible, due to tall weeds and bramble bushes.  But I found a recently made wide path to it, presumably mowed for cross-country skiing this winter. 9x12 inches, oil on linen.

Looking at the Hopper and Mount Greylock from Field Farm in Williamstown, MA is how I spent today's balmy afternoon. I'm not sure it's possible to paint the view, though I try.  9x12 inches, oil on linen.

In the warm October light

Painting in the mid-afternoon at a pond in the warm October sunlight is something you wish would never end but it's built-in that it will end.  I suppose that's one reason why I painted it.  9x12 inches, oil on linen.

The Faults of Nature

When I first looked at this site, at the edge of the Cold River, I thought that nature is so concentrated, difficult, & messy, that it's hopeless to think you can paint it. I still think so.  I just read that painters were once encouraged to improve upon the faults of nature by emulating Raphael.  The faults of nature are only those that reveal the faults of the artist. 9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

Fewer Leaves, Same Bramble Branch

After the clouds cleared up today, I went back to the same spot as last week on Sheep Hill in Williamstown, MA.  I even found the same prickly bramble branch that bothered me then at the edge of the path.  The main difference was fewer leaves on the trees. 8x16 inches, oil on linen canvas.

Ents In Cimiez, Nice

A drawing of olive trees in the garden at the park in Cimiez, Nice.  They remind me of ents, because they are so old, each has a distinct personality, and they seem to move around, and certainly they look at you.  I would like to do a series. 10x8 inches, pencil on paper.
